Add a watermark to a PDF

Mark a PDF with text such as CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT, or with your logo. Choose the position, rotation, size, colour and opacity, repeat it across the page if you like, and put it over or behind the page content. The preview shows the watermark on your actual pages before you save.

A watermark added here is a visible mark, not protection: it does not stop anyone from copying text, printing or editing the PDF, and it can be removed with PDF editing software. It is not a forensic or invisible (security) watermark.

How to use Watermark PDF

  1. Select a PDF file or drag it into the box. Enter the password if it is protected.
  2. Type the watermark text (or pick an example) or choose a PNG, JPG or WebP image.
  3. Choose the position, rotation, opacity, size and the pages; optionally repeat it across each page or put it behind the content.
  4. Check the preview on a few pages, then select "Add watermark". Your original file is not changed.

Good to know: limitations

  • Visible watermarks only; this is not a security feature and does not prevent copying or removal.
  • Behind the content, the watermark is hidden on pages with an opaque background (for example scans).
  • Password-protected PDFs are saved without the password.
  • Digitally signed PDFs: adding a watermark makes the existing signature invalid.
  • Very large PDFs may exceed the memory available on phones.

Frequently asked questions

Does a watermark protect my PDF?

No. A watermark is a visible mark that shows the status or owner of a document. It does not stop copying, printing or editing, and it can be removed with PDF editing software. It is not an invisible or forensic security watermark.

Does it reduce the quality of my PDF?

No. The watermark is added on top of (or behind) the original pages; nothing is re-rendered. Text watermarks are real text, and JPG images are embedded without being compressed again.

Can I use a transparent logo?

Yes. Transparent PNG logos keep their transparency, and you can also make the whole watermark more or less transparent with the opacity setting.

Why does a watermark behind the content not show on some pages?

Behind the content, the watermark is covered by anything opaque on the page, such as the image of a scanned page. Use "Over the page content" with a low opacity there.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The file and the image are processed by your browser on your device. Only the fonts for the text are loaded from this website.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The site is financed by advertising.
