Add page numbers to a PDF

Number the pages of a PDF exactly the way you need. Choose one of six positions, a format such as "Page 1 of 10" or Roman numerals, the font, size and colour, and which pages get a number, for example everything except the cover. The preview shows the numbers on the page as they will appear in your file.

How to use Add page numbers

  1. Select a PDF file or drag it into the box. Enter the password if it is protected.
  2. Choose the position and the number format, optionally with your own text before or after the number.
  3. Choose which pages are numbered and with which number to start. Adjust the font, size, colour, opacity and distance from the edge.
  4. Check the preview on a few pages, then select "Add page numbers". Your original file is not changed.

Good to know: limitations

  • Numbers are placed at a fixed distance from the page edge. If a document has content right at the edge, increase the distance or choose another position.
  • Existing page numbers are found when they are text in the PDF. Numbers that are part of a picture (for example in a scan) are not found and stay.
  • Password-protected PDFs are saved without the password.
  • Digitally signed PDFs: adding numbers makes the existing signature invalid.
  • Very large PDFs may exceed the memory available on phones.

Frequently asked questions

Does adding page numbers change the rest of my PDF?

No. The numbers are added on top of the original pages as text. Nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed, so text, images, links and comments stay as they were.

Can I leave out the cover page?

Yes. Choose "All except the first page", or number only a range of pages. You decide whether the next page starts at 1 or counts the cover and starts at 2.

What about landscape or rotated pages?

Each page is numbered in the chosen corner as it is displayed, so numbers sit in the same place on portrait, landscape and rotated pages, and on pages of different sizes.

What if my PDF already has page numbers?

They are looked for when you open the file. If any are found, you choose: remove them and add the new ones, or keep them and add the new ones as well (you are warned if both would be at the same edge). Removed numbers are taken out of the page text, not just painted over.

Can I use my own words or another language?

Yes. Add any text before or after the number, in any language; the matching font is embedded in the PDF so it displays correctly everywhere.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The file is opened and saved by your browser on your device. Only the fonts for the numbers are loaded from this website.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The site is financed by advertising.
