Recognise text in scanned pages
Scanned pages are pictures of text. Text recognition (OCR) finds the words so they can be searched, copied and changed. It runs on your device and can make mistakes, so please check the recognised text.

How to use Edit PDF
- Select a PDF file or drag it into the box. Enter the password if it is protected.
- Choose a tool: click a line of existing text to change it, click on the page to add text, click a blank line or form field to fill it in, or drag to highlight and draw.
- Move, resize or restyle anything you added. Undo and redo are always available.
- Select "Preview changes" to compare the result with the original page by page, then "Save edited PDF" to download it.
Good to know: limitations
- Existing text is edited one line at a time. Text inside graphics (form objects), drawn (Type 3) fonts and invisible text can only be covered, not removed; you are told when that is the case.
- If the original font lacks a letter you type, the line is rewritten in a matching Noto font, which can look slightly different. Longer text is condensed or made smaller (to 80%) to fit; beyond that you are warned that it may overlap.
- Text recognition (OCR) on scanned pages can make mistakes, especially with poor scans, handwriting or unusual fonts; check the recognised text. Changes to recognised lines are painted over the scanned image.
- Digitally signed PDFs: any change makes the existing signature invalid.
- Password-protected PDFs are saved without the password.
- Forms that use only XFA (a format from older Adobe software) cannot be filled; for forms with both, the XFA part is removed when you fill them.
- Signature fields cannot be signed here.
- Very large PDFs may exceed the memory available on phones.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is opened and saved by your browser on your device. Only fonts for the languages you type are downloaded from our own server; your document never leaves your device.
Which languages can I type?
Latin, Greek and Cyrillic alphabets, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hebrew, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Letters are joined and positioned correctly, right-to-left text is supported, and the language is detected while you type.
Can others still search and copy the text I add?
Yes. Added text is stored as real text with an embedded font, not as a picture, so it can be searched, copied and read aloud.
Can I change text that is already in the PDF?
Yes. Choose "Edit existing text" and click a line. The original text is removed from the file and the new text is written in the same place, in the document’s own font when it contains all the letters you type, otherwise in the closest matching Noto font. Text that cannot be changed in place, such as text inside a logo graphic, can be covered instead; the editor tells you when the original stays in the file underneath.
Can I fill in lines like "Name: ________"?
Yes. "Fill in blank lines" finds underscores, dotted lines and drawn lines that have nothing written on them. Click one and type; the text is placed on the line in the size of the label next to it, and you can still move it afterwards.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
Yes. Scanned pages are pictures of text, so first choose "Recognise text (OCR)". The text is recognised on your device in the language you choose; the recognition engine and language data are downloaded from our own server the first time. Recognised text makes the page searchable, and you can then change lines with "Edit existing text". Recognition can make mistakes, so please check the result.
Can I fill in PDF forms?
Yes. Text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons and lists are shown on the page; click one and fill it in. The values are saved as normal form values that other programs can read and change.
Is my original file changed?
Never. Saving always creates a new PDF. You can compare it with the original page by page before you use it.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The site is financed by advertising.
